IRClass Academy Conducts Marine Casualty Investigation Training

IRClass Academy has successfully concluded an intensive Marine Casualty Investigation Training program aimed to enhance the investigative capabilities of maritime professionals, equipping them with the knowledge and skills required to conduct thorough and compliant marine casualty investigations.The program provided an in-depth understanding of the purpose, scope, and principal definitions of marine casualty investigations, along with the mandatory responsibilities of safety investigation authorities, including notification protocols. Participants were guided through the regulatory requirements for investigating very serious casualties and the necessary agreements with interested states. The course also covered the powers vested in investigative authorities, the dynamics of parallel investigations, and the importance of inter-agency cooperation.The training delved into recommended practices and core principles of marine casualty investigations, emphasising structured methodologies to ensure impartiality and accuracy. Additionally, the program addressed the critical aspects of confidentiality and the process of compiling a draft report, including the necessary notifications to involved parties.Through case studies, practical insights, and interactive discussions, the training strengthened participants' ability to navigate complex investigative scenarios while adhering to international best practices. IRClass Academy Successfully Concludes Bespoke Training for Zodiac Maritime

IRClass Academy, the training arm of Indian Register of Shipping successfully conducted a one-day training programme on the Recruitment and Placement Services Licence (RPSL) and the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) exclusively for Zodiac Maritime Agencies (India) Pvt. Ltd. The training, held on 6th February 2025, was in line with the requirements outlined in the RPSL gazette notification by the Government of India, which mandates RPSL holders to ensure regular training for their personnel.The programme included classroom lectures and interactive workshops designed to enhance participants’ understanding of RPSL and MLC requirements. Through in-depth discussions and case studies, the training aimed to bridge knowledge gaps and ensure compliance with regulatory frameworks. Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) commemorated its Golden Jubilee with a grand celebration in Mumbai, reflecting on its remarkable journey of 50 years of innovation, service, and leadership in the global maritime sector.Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, Honourable Union Cabinet Minister for Ports Shipping & Waterways graced the occasion as a Chief Guest along with Guest of Honour Shri Shyam Jagannathan Director General of Shipping, Capt B K Tyagi, CMD, The Shipping Corporation of India, Shri Unmesh Wagh, Chairman JN Port Authority and galaxy of industry stalwarts and maritime professionals.Executive Chairman Shri Arun Sharma delivered a powerful welcome address that shed light on organisation’s history, contributions to the maritime sector, its commitment to innovation, and its vision for the future.A key highlight of the event was the unveiling ceremony led by Shri Sarbananda Sonowal. Indian Register of Shipping and Cochin Shipyard Collaborate on Indigenous Autonomous Vessel Project ‛SWAYAT’

Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) and Cochin Shipyard Ltd (CSL) have entered into an umbrella agreement aimed at developing indigenous technologies and enhancing the capabilities of both organizations. As part of this initiative, IRS and CSL have signed a separate cooperation agreement for the development and certification of an autonomous vessel named ‘SWAYAT,’ which is being constructed at CSL as a fully indigenous pilot project.Key technology partners include KPIT and other Indian manufacturers specializing in autonomous systems and components. The vessel will be verified in accordance with IRS Guidelines on Autonomous and Remotely Operated Vessels, ensuring compliance with the highest standards. In addition, the cyber security aspects will be addressed as per the IRS Guidelines on Maritime Cyber Safety.The project also includes the certification of an indigenously developed navigation and communication suite, which will be verified by IRS. Collaboration with leading academic and research institutions will play a key role in design and simulation studies for the vessel.Mr. T K Sahu, Joint MD of IRS stated, “It is a matter of great pride for IRS to be part of this prestigious project with CSL and their industry partners. This initiative demonstrates India’s indigenous capabilities in advanced technologies and aligns with the Government of India’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ mission. Keel laid for the lead vessel of Indian Navy’s Fleet Support Ship, classed with Indian Register of Shipping, at Hindustan Shipyard Ltd.

The keel of the first of five Fleet Support Ships (FSS), being built at Hindustan Shipyard Ltd., Visakhapatnam, as the HSL VC11200 project, was recently laid at a ceremony held at the shipyard. This prestigious project, which, when delivered, would considerably enhance the Indian Navy’s operational capabilities also marks a major milestone in the shipyard’s ability to undertake complex projects.The Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) is providing classification services for all five vessels. These ships are being constructed in compliance with IRS Naval Combatant Rules, with IRS also being required to certify compliance of the vessels with the build specifications. The vessels are scheduled for phased delivery, commencing mid-2027.The Fleet Support Ships are designed to significantly enhance the Indian Navy’s “Blue Water” capabilities. They will provide critical support to fleet ships at sea by replenishing fuel, water, ammunition, and stores, enabling sustained maritime operations without returning to harbour. Furthermore, these ships are designed for deployment for Humanitarian Aid and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations during natural calamities and emergencies.Cdr KK Dhawan, Head Defence IRS, stated ‘IRS is committed to support the Make in India and Atma Nirbhar Bharat call given by Hon’ble Prime Minister. Indian Register of Shipping Reflects on 2024 and Sets Ambitious Goals for 2025

Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) concludes 2024 with remarkable achievements across sustainability, innovation, and maritime safety, making its Golden Jubilee year a testament to its legacy and vision. From spearheading decarbonisation projects to reviving India’s maritime heritage, IRS has reinforced its leadership role in the global maritime sector.In line with global sustainability goals, IRS achieved significant milestones in decarbonisation and technology. It classed a next-generation electric ferry, furthering the push for cleaner maritime transport. A landmark collaboration with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders saw the successful demonstration of an Autonomous Navigation System with dual navigation capabilities, signalling a step forward in maritime innovation. Additionally, IRS partnered with IIT Bombay to develop a ship trajectory prediction tool aimed at improving navigational safety. In another significant move, IRS joined forces with Cochin Shipyard Limited on the ambitious “Swayat” project, towards the development of India’s first indigenously designed autonomous vessel.The year 2024 has been transformative for IRS, marking a significant rise in classification and allied technical services for Indian Defence and Paramilitary forces. Key milestones include the launch of four shallow-water Anti-Submarine Warfare Corvettes, a Semi-Submersible Pontoon, two Pollution Control Vessels, and the delivery of a Survey Vessel (Large).IRS has expanded its scope to complex projects, including six New Generation Missile Vessels at Cochin Shipyard, five Fleet Support Ships at Hindustan Shipyard, and 11 New Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels at GRSE and GSL. Additionally, six Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels, a Cadet Training Ship, and 14 Fast Patrol Vessels will be built at Mazagon Dock, Mumbai. Notably, IRS provided third-party inspection services for a submarine undergoing refit at HSL, a first for any classification society in India.IRS continues to enhance its technical capabilities, notably in underwater radiated noise prediction and autonomous vessel certification. It is also supporting the indigenization of defence equipment, aligning with India’s Swavlambit Bharat (Self-Reliant India) mission.There has been significant progress in its partnership with Dassault Systèmes to implement the 3DEXPERIENCE platform. The project is currently undergoing trials and validations, with promising outcomes. The platform is expected to go live by Q2 2025, marking a major step forward in digital transformation and operational efficiency.IRS’ focus on industry partnerships was evident through a series of strategic MOUs. Collaborations with SeaTech, Singapore, and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers focused on the development of autonomous and green energy vessels. An agreement with the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research advanced the design of specialised ocean research vessels. Furthermore, IRS’ association with Marin, Netherlands, provided cutting-edge hydrodynamic studies and model testing for new construction projects, showcasing its commitment to technological excellence.The year also saw IRS’ active involvement in reviving India’s rich maritime heritage. IRS played a pivotal role in the “Stitched Ship Project,” offering its technical expertise to support the construction of a vessel using ancient shipbuilding techniques. Blending tradition with modern maritime standards, this initiative celebrates India’s cultural legacy.A new leadership in 2024, with Mr. P.K. Indian Register of Shipping supports Defence indigenisation through marine component certification

Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) has undertaken the certification of indigenously developed marine components for defence projects, marking a significant milestone in enhancing defence and maritime manufacturing capabilities within the country. The product certifications were conducted in compliance with national and international standards/specifications.Among the projects validated and certified is a fouling-release coating, developed by DRDO’s Naval Materials Research Laboratory (NMRL). This advanced coating is designed to inhibit fouling due to marine growth when applied on the underwater portion of hulls of ships and submarines. It is currently undergoing user trials, and the technology will soon be transferred to manufacturers for mass production.A fully automated Marine Sewage Treatment Plant developed by M/s. Krasny Defence Technologies Ltd. has been recently certified by IRS, towards ensuring compliance with environmental safety standards.Further, an "Intelligent Weld Inspector" has been developed by M/s. Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd., a Defence Public Sector Undertaking. This is a rule-based AI algorithm that automates the recognition of weld defects by analysing computerized radiography images, thereby improving precision in non-destructive testing of welds and acceptance by class.Also, M/s. QED Analytical LLP has designed an AI-based Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL) sensor for wire rope testing, which utilizes permanent magnets and ‘Hall effect’ sensors to detect flaws in steel wire ropes, thereby ensuring their safety and reliability.The certification process involved close collaboration between IRS and the developers, including comprehensive technology assessments, development of quality assurance measures, and satisfactory performance trials witnessed by experts.Cdr KK Dhawan, Head Defence IRS, stated: "It is a matter of great pride for IRS to collaborate with Indian industry partners for certifying indigenously developed products for the defence and maritime industry. Reviving India’s Maritime Heritage: Indian Register of Shipping Plays Key Role in the Stitched Ship Project

In a remarkable endeavour to celebrate and revive India’s ancient maritime legacy, the Stitched Ship Project is recreating a 4th-century common era vessel using traditional shipbuilding techniques. The initiative, led by the Ministry of Culture in collaboration with the Indian Navy, M/s Hodi Innovations, and other stakeholders, draws inspiration from historical references such as Ajanta murals and ancient texts.This project embodies India's long-standing connection to maritime trade and innovation. Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) is proud to play a critical role in this project by ensuring that the reconstructed ship conforms with modern safety and design standards. While maintaining historical authenticity, the vessel’s design has been refined to comply with appropriate stability and strength requirements for the intended sea voyage.The ship is currently under construction and is expected to be completed in 2025.
