Design For Sea: DeFoS

Based on onboard measurement data from ship owners, the actual operational profile for various ships was determined.
This operational profile consists of information of the vessel (draught, speed and power) and the environment (wind and wave conditions).
Simulations were carried out on an extended set of ship types and routes to create a database of operational Sea Margin for different ship types and routes. IRS along with other ship operators participated in this JIP co-ordinated by MARIN.
Based on this database a calculation method was developed to determine the Sea Margin of a ship in an early design stage. Simplistic tool was developed for sea margin prediction.
