Wind Assisted Ship Propulsion : WiSP 3.0
- Wind propulsion technology is identified as one of the innovative energy efficiency technologies in ships by IMO. Different types of wind propulsion technologies include rotor, kite, hard sails and soft sails. The recent developments indicate that number of vessels adapting wind propulsion technologies is going to increase in coming years.
- The WiSP 3 Joint Industry Project (JIP) is initiated in Q2-2024 by MARIN, as a follow up project for JIP WiSP and WiSP 2. Tentative schedule of WiSP-3 is for two years. IRS is a member of WiSP-3 which includes around 30 participants such as technology suppliers, shipyards, ship owners, ship operators and classification societies.
- WiSP 3 will focus on the standardisation of performance predictions of wind assisted ships and updates on the regulatory framework, including EEDI, EEXI and CII.
- Various topics including harmonisation of class rules, improved performance predictions, development of various industry standards, Impact of system controls and design considerations will be explored during JIP.
